What’s a dual constitution ?
We saw in the previous articles the dominant constitutions, when we have one of the three doshas present at more than 50% in us (Prakriti Vata, Prakriti Pitta, Prakriti Kapha). However, it often happens that we have a double or mixed constitution with two main doshas. We have a major dosha between 40-50% and a secondary dosha between 30-40%. Therefore there are six possible combinations :
Vata-Pitta
Vata-Kapha
Pitta-Vata
Pitta-Kapha
Kapha-Vata
Kapha-Pitta
The dual constitution differs from the dominant constitution given that the two doshas will be mixed in our physical appearance, our physiology and our psychology. This constitution is called the birth constitution because it is fixed and cannot be changed. It follows us throughout our life, from our birth to our death.
This is why it should not be confused with Vikriti, the state of imbalance. It can happen that one or more doshas are in excess in the body, this imbalance is the cause of diseases. Imbalances evolve during our life according to our habits and our lifestyle.
Double Constitution Kapha-Pitta
Lifestyle
The Kapha-Pitta constitution is composed of four elements : water and earth, which form Kapha, and fire and water, which characterize Pitta. A Kapha-Pitta person has these four elements predominating within her, with a higher proportion of water and earth. The Kapha dosha is more present than the Pitta dosha; mud dominates over fire. The image of a valiant mountain is used to describe this constitution.
A Kapha-Pitta person has to follow a Kapha lifestyle while adapting it to her Pitta. Her lifestyle has tp be adapted to the season. In spring, the season of Kapha aggravation, she has to ensure that her Kapha is pacified. In summer, the season of Pitta aggravation, she has to ensure that her Pitta is pacified.
On a physical level
Both doshas are composed of water, which gives this constitution a certain heaviness. The build of Kapha-Pittas is massive with graceful forms. Her bones are strong, her shoulders often broad. Like Kapha-dominant people, she easily stores fat or water and has difficulty losing weight. Her skin is soft, often somewhat oily, and her hair is often thick, often long and tends to be oily. Her gaze is often soft and piercing. The Kapha-Pitta constitution is the most robust of all.
This constitution has a weak digestive system. Digestion is slow and weak.
In terms of psychology
Like Kapha-dominant people, Kapha-Pitta constitution has a great capacity for forgiveness. She seeks harmony within herself and in her relationships. She draws much of her strength from her home. She has a real need for a harmonious home in order to thrive.
These are people who won't say things to avoid hurting others. They tend to live for the other, to melt into them, and to forget themselves. They are often emotionally dependent. This sense of sacrifice is their weakness.
The tenacity of Pitta and the endurance of Kapha allow them to pursue long-term projects.
Ayurveda doesn't establish a hierarchy between the different constitutions. There is no constitution that will be better than another. Each constitution has its strengths and weaknesses. The whole point of knowing your constitution is to be able to better understand yourself, better know your needs and be able to respond to them appropriately with an adapted lifestyle in order to improve your quality of life.
