A man's life can be compared to a boat trip on the open seas. Like a boat, man is on the journey of life. During his journey he will face obstacles like a boat has to face waves to arrive safe and sound.
The boat posture allows us to work on our mental strength.
Identity card
Nava means boat and asana posture. When we execute this posture, the body takes the shape of a boat, hence its name. It is a seated and balanced posture. In terms of Ayurveda and doshas, the boat posture decreases the Vata dosha. It also decreases the Kapha dosha when held for a certain time. As for the Pitta dosha, if the posture is held for a long time, it will be increased because this posture is stimulating. If it is held briefly, it will decrease Pitta and regulate Agni which is our digestive fire.
Benefits
At the physical level
This posture energizes the body, it is stimulating. Navasana improves the functioning of the digestive system and increases Agni (digestive fire). It strengthens the abdominal muscles, the muscles of the torso and strengthens the back. It also improves the functioning of the spleen, liver and gallbladder.
The hip flexors are also strengthened.
At the mental level
The boat improves our ability to concentrate, our mental strength and works on pugnacity.
Perform the posture step by step
Step 1 : before the posture
Start in the staff pose, Dandasana. Sit, legs straight in front.
Bend your legs then tilt your torso slightly backwards.
Step 2 : the posture
Lift one foot, then the other. Raise your arms, horizontally. Straighten your legs, toes pointing towards the sky. Gaze forward.
Variations
I can't straighten my legs ?
I can practice the posture with bent legs at first.
If the bent legs option is still too difficult, I can keep my hands on the ground or even lift one leg.
I want to intensify the posture ?
I can place my hands behind my head then lower my legs towards the mat then raise them.
Watch out for
It is not recommended to practice the boat posture in case of injuries to the joints (hips, shoulders), in case of diarrhea, headaches or pregnancy. Always consult and ask the advice of your doctor in case of health problems.
In all cases, it is strongly recommended to be accompanied by a person qualified in yoga in order to adapt the postures to your situation.
Face life's obstacles like a boat faces the waves of the ocean by working on Navasana and your pugnacity.
