What is dual constitution ?
We saw in the previous articles the dominant constitutions, when we have one of the three doshas present at more than 50% in us (Prakriti Vata, Prakriti Pitta, Prakriti Kapha). However, it often happens that we have a double or mixed constitution with two main doshas. We have a major dosha between 40-50% and a secondary dosha between 30-40%. Therefore there are six possible combinations :
Vata-Pitta
Vata-Kapha
Pitta-Vata
Pitta-Kapha
Kapha-Vata
Kapha-Pitta
The dual constitution differs from the dominant constitution given that the two doshas will be mixed in our physical appearance, our physiology and our psychology. This constitution is called birth constitution because it is fixed and cannot be changed. It follows us throughout our life, from our birth to our death.
This is why, it should not be confused with Vikriti, the state of imbalance. It can happen that one or more doshas are in excess in the body, this imbalance is the cause of diseases. Imbalances evolve during our life according to our habits and our lifestyle.
Pitta-Vata
The Pitta-Vata constitution is composed of four element s: fire and water which characterize Pitta and air and space which form Vata. A Pitta-Vata person has these four elements with a greater proportion of fire and water. The Pitta dosha is more present than the Vata dosha, fire dominates over wind.
A Pitta-Vata person has to follow a Pitta lifestyle while adapting it to her Vata. Her lifestyle has to be adapted to the season. In autumn and winter, seasons of aggravation of Vata, the lifestyle has to pacify Vata. In summer, season of aggravation of Pitta, Pitta has to pacified.
This constitution can also be called the blowtorch.
In terms of physical appearance, it is the Pitta dosha which is very often in the majority. Just like a Pitta dominant person, Pitta-Vata people are charismatic people with harmonious features. Their gaze is piercing and they are of average height. Weight gain and loss are rather easy. Their skin doesn't tolerate the sun very well and they generally have moles.
Pitta-Vata people are thinner than Pitta people because of the Vata dosha which gives thiness to the skeleton. Hair can be fragile, another characteristic of the Vata dosha.
Their digestion is similar to Pitta people, they have a strong appetite. However, because of the Vata dosha they can experience digestive irregularities and in particular difficulties in digesting certain foods such as legumes or raw vegetables because they increase Vata. Because of the fire element, they are sensitive to inflammation.
Fire is also found in their psychology. These are hot-blooded, they can get angry easily, generally for the same reasons. Injustice is often a subject that can make them angry. In terms of their professional life, they have a great capacity for work but need to work for something that is right for them.
The Vata dosha comes has a strong enthusiasm. A dominant Pitta is passionate. The Pitta-Vata is a passionate person with a contagious enthusiasm.
As we saw in the article on the Vata constitution, Vata people are people who can be anxious and often feel the emotion of fear. This is the opposite of Pitta. Pitta doesn't feel this emotion of fear very much. Fear makes them angry. Pitta-Vata people feel more fear than a Pitta, but this fear will not prevent to move into action. Thanks to the courage of Pitta, these people face and overcome their fears, which is one of their great qualities.
Another of their qualities is their great creativity given by Vata. However, where a Vata person might not necessarily finish what they started, Pitta has this passion and this ability to see things through to the end. Pitta-Vata people can exploit their creative capacity thanks to their determination.
Finally, two other great qualities of these two doshas will intertwine : curiosity (Vata) and the need to be intellectually nourished (Pitta). Pitta-Vata people are curious people who love and have a real need to learn new things, to be intellectually stimulated.
Pitta-Vata people are made up of the 4 elements : fire, water, air, space. But they lack one of the elements, that of the earth. The earth represents anchoring, stability. This constitution lacks stability and must, by adapting an appropriate lifestyle, ensure to put a routine in place in order to provide this anchoring in order to compensate for this weakness.
Ayurveda doesn't establish a hierarchy between the different constitutions. There is no constitution that will be better than another. Each constitution has its strengths and weaknesses. The whole point of knowing your constitution is to be able to better understand yourself, better know your needs and be able to respond to them appropriately with an adapted lifestyle in order to improve your quality of life.
